How Google Maps Failed

2009 January 26

I just recently returned from New York City, where I went to see a concert at Madison Sqaure garden.  About 3 days in advance, I went to Google Maps and printed directions to everything, even the restaurants we wanted to eat at, so we would be prepared.  Much to my dismay, Google has one major error…Madison Sqaure Garden is misplaced.  We walked 4 miles in the wrong direction and had to take a cab back to the Garden, just to be 20 minutes late.  Luckily, we only missed an opening band, got to see the entire city of New York South of Central Park (World Trade Center, Empire State Building, etc) and worked off our dinner!  Overall it was an amazing trip.

Below are screen shots from Google Maps, note that the address for Madison Square Garden is 2 Penn Plaza and the hotel was on 46th Street.  At the bottom of Screen Shot 1 (The Garden) is 14th Street, at the top of Screen Shot 2 is 14th street, and point A is where Google told me to go.  A frantic call home and a cab drive later, we arrived at the correct destination.
